Hippo is our first collaboration as Director and Writer and is, in fact, our very, first film.
Hippo was made with no budget but we were incredibly fortunate to have an all professional cast and crew who kindly took time out to make Hippo happen and I cannot thank them enough for their collaboration.
On the day, I was keen to have a dynamic, creative environment where everyone had a voice; This was an an opportunity to relax, experiment and concentrate on our craft and, ultimately, have fun.
I am a great believer in driving the story through the characters’ journeys, and Jane and I spent a lot of time creating backstories so our actors could fully understand their characters journey. This meant we could actually rehearse the scenes prior to filming and then adapt on the day.
The concept for Hippo was to create a piece that left questions, we wanted the audience to feel like they were dropped into the middle of a broader storyline, where the characters were already developed and the audience anticipating the next chapter.
If you’re still gently arguing about this film in the pub afterwards, then I consider that a success.
